Still unknown a few years ago, the village of Barra de Cunhaú attracts more and more visitors every year due to the tranquility and beauty of the place. A part of the beach is classified ecological sanctuary of the marine turtles.
In the arrival in this fishermen quiet village, it is a real paradisiacal spectacle which offers to the eyes of the visitors, the wide estuary of quiet water of the rivers 'Curimatàu' and 'Cunhaú', the strong sea which collides on the sand barrier in front of village and sight on the magnificent dunes and strips of coconut palms.
The village of Cunhaú exists since a long time, at first occupied by the tupi people, then by the Portuguese , Dutch and French colonizers. A small fort was built there in 1550.
The darkest page of its history was the massacre in 1645 of a part of the population of Cunhaú. Since 2007, October 10th, was declared holiday in memory to these martyrs and to those of the Uruaçu farm.
The beach is frequented the weekend by the inhabitants of Cunhaú and the Canguaretama city. The sight of the bay and the other bank of the river are splendid.
The boat trip on the river is the big attraction of Cunhaú, with sight on the mangrove swamps (Manguezais) and good bathing.

A ferry transports local people and tourists to the other side of the bay on the beautiful land of white sand of Barra de Cunhaú.
Since the end of the 90s, the coast is gradually surrounded by hotels, inn (pousadas) and restaurants. Those serve excellent grilled fish and seafood.
You also find there an important shrimp production.
