'Mãe Luíza' and 'Areia Preta' are small popular beaches with barriers of rocks.
'Areia Preta' is a small beach situated at the beginning of the coastal road (Via Costeira) and the name comes from its black sand. The access from Mãe Luiza neighborhood is made by staircases.
The name of 'Mãe Luíza' made reference to an old wise black woman who took charge of needy people who lived in the dunes area many years ago.
Mãe Luíza lighthouse dominates the beach of its 37 meters of height. You can visit it on Sundays after noon. Rocks and strong waves of 'Mãe Luíza' beach make it dangerous for bathing but convenient for surfing practice by the young people of the popular district of the same name.
