Founded 150 years ago, the city of Parelhas possesses a population of a little over 19000 inhabitants and is situated in the South of the Seridó Region.

The city owes its name to a sporting event, which spread in the XIXth century, called ‘Parelhas’. The riders of this time always raced, always competed in pairs or ‘Parelhas’, in an ancient type of joquey activity.
The place where these races took place was known as ‘Boqueirão das Parelhas’. It brought people from all the sorrounding regions and these races became a Sunday Event, with prizes and festivities.
Parelhas possesses a big lake called 'Açude do Boqueirão’, where the inhabitants meet on the weekend.
