The name 'Barra do Rio' is due to the Ceara-Mirim River which flows into the sea in this place. The beach, sheltered by reefs, possesses calm and shallow waters, a paradise for the fishermen to throw their nets at the schools of fishes which are made prisoner of the waters by the low tide
This beach is little heard of, it is in the route used by may vehicles, specially the dune-buggies heading to the beaches in the North of Natal. The transportation of cars through the waters is made on small barges, which have women's names and slide on top of the river by means of the manual labor of the boatman.
